We took our family and made a vacation out of a conference trip. We have two young children and weren't interested in paying the expensive prices of the ""conference hotels"", so I booked this hotel on my own. We stayed in a 1 bed suite (king bedroom, bath, and living area with a fold out queen bed). The price for this room was less than other single rooms in the downtown area. I KNOW that this room at least was recently remodeled because the paint cover was still over the smoke detector and they removed it upon our arrival. Yes, the room does open to the outside, but it is sheltered from the street - our door opened onto the hot tub area. The lobby was very nice, though a little small - not one for hanging out in. The bed was nice and the bedding was very soft and comfortable. The bathroom had a shower and a tub. The t.v. did only get like 10 channels, but that wasn't why we were there, anyway. We had two balconies that looked out towards the water and little Italy. We also had a small wet bar in the room that consisted of a sink, mini fridge, microwave, and a coffe pot. This was great for us since we needed to keep milk all the time. Other things of convenience for this hotel: the hotel shuttle was great and with public transportation allowed us to avoidt a rental car - they took us to balboa park/zoo, Seaworld, and to/from the airport. We took the coaster to legoland. there is a 7-11 a block away and restaurants everywhere the train/coaster/trolley station is about a 10min walk there's a small playground park behind it The staff was excellent and very courteous.

We stayed here for one night for a wedding we were attending. We wanted a simple, inexpensive hotel just to sleep in. This is really more of a motel than a hotel. They redid the lobby so it's fairly nice, but the rooms and interior (if you can call it that) are still pretty shabby. The room doors are exterior facing, like a motel would be. You can't open the drapes in the room unless you want everyone who walks by to see you. The AC was only a box/window unit that looked about 30 years old. It was really loud and kind of smelled oddly. The rooms are tiny and poorly furnished and the bathrooms are ludicrously small! More than one person staying in the room was uncomfortable. The bed was very hard and had no pillow top mattress that we were promised when we made the reservation. The front desk staff is awful. Completely unfriendly, no one even cracks a smile there. Also they don't monitor their parking or hotel access, so I didn't feel very safe there. Anyone can park in the hotel lot, there's no guard and since the rooms face the outside anyone can climb the stairs and gain access. The only good thing about this hotel is the location. Right in the heart of Little Italy, there's so many great restaurants around! It's directly behind Filippi's so the smell of italian food is hanging in the air. That's the only redeeming quality I could find with it. I guess it's my fault for trying to be frugal. I could have paid 40-50 bucks more and stayed in a real hotel. I would not stay here again.
