My husband and I just returned from a long weekend in Vail in mid-October. I would recommend this time of year to anyone who enjoys visiting a beautiful location at an uncrowded time of year. We stayed at the gorgeous Sonnenalp Resort for a fraction of the cost during ski season. We had a big room with a fireplace and an enormous bathroom, including a soaking tub large enough for 2 people. The room came with a full breakfast (and it was a fantastic selection from fresh fruits to eggs benedict) and access to the workout room and business center. The hotel staff was extremely helpful and friendly. Everyone dressed in Tyrolian outfits, which fit the ambiance of the hotel, which was built like someone's large Bavarian chalet. Vail Village and the adjoining Vail Lionshead area were fun to shop in, even though a few stores were closed until November. But the most popular (and usually quite expensive) restaurants were open, and you could get in even without a reservation, which is unheard of a few weeks from now. In addition, these terrific eateries were offering half-price entree specials! We had great meals at Terra Bistro, Sweet Basil, and Montauk Seafood. While the aspens had lost most of their leaves and there was no snow on the ground, the weather was crisp, the skies a brilliant blue, and the area was perfect for hiking, biking, and exploring.
