I was very disappointed - as the reputation of the Holiday Inn Express is much better than this building had to offer. No mention of the parking fee prior to arrival. Lobby is small, and the hotel was full for a conert we were attending. The staff seemed to have cared less that we were there, like we were just getting in the way of them doing their jobs. No one was friendly. The elevators are slow and do not accomodate moving people. On our way out, we had to wait 15 minutes while elevators full of people passed by our floor. Finnaly we carried all of our luggage and cooler down six flights of stairs, and then waited 30 minutes for our car in the line of people waiting for valet. The hotel was not very sound proof. You can hear doors slamming, etc. Housekeeping came to our door before we left as well, wanting to clean the room. The pool was gross - didn't appear to have been cleaned recently and there were clumps of hair on the side of the pool that looked like they had been there for a while. The room was "clean enough". The hotel had various construction projects going on - remodeling that looked like someone started and then forgot it. Wallpaper peeling in the halls with MOLD growing behind it, carpet pulled up and left there in a heap. I would describe this hotel as "Jank" and I have stayed at Motel 6's that were much nicer.

The first clue on the lack of service and attention to detail was when I checked in and the clerk finished a text message before waiting on me. The second was a big sign posted in the office behind the front desk which said in big bold letters ""ANSWER THE PHONE"". I should have turned around right then and there and walked out, but it was late, downtown Detroit, not in a very good looking neighborhood - so what choice did I have? Yes, NONE. My room had a wonderful view of a decayed building across the street, there was no water pressure and the hair dryer didn't work. When I called the front desk regarding the hair dryer, they first suggested that I did not have it plugged in - and then implied it was my fault! The housekeeping service that day consisted of someone throwing the bed spread back on the bed and turning on the air conditioner. Nothing was cleaned, no towels were moved. There were virtually no choices for an evening meal - as they do not have room service. Oh, and half of the place is being ""remodeled"" - I had to ask to what. So I decided to go to another hotel. I was told I would not be reimbursed for the days I did not stay there because it was bad for business - like a horrible hotel experience isn't.....I decided to leave anyway and pay for a clean, safe, service oriented hotel. The staff there needs to understand what it means to be in the hospitality business. I doubt I will return to Detroit any time soon, but if you are thinking about this place - think twice...

We booked this hotel for the sole purpose of going downtown for opening day and not having to drive home. The hotel was a great decision. During the day we walked to greektown and then to the game. After the game we walked back to greektown and then took the people mover back from greektown to the hotel later that night. The hotel rooms were very nice and clean. The full breakfast bar in the morning was a bonus as well. If only downtown could turn around, we would love to go downtown more often. The sad part was when we woke up in the morning, looked out the window, only to see all the streets vacant and no one around. Maybe one day in my lifetime we will have a downtown to be proud of. We got a glimmer of that this night.

We arrived 3 hours after check in time and a room (with 2 queen beds) was not ready or available. We had to wait only 20 minutes until room was ready. Also given free valet parking because of the inconvenience. Concert and Tigers game both going on at same time. Excellent location for walking from Fillmore Theater and many other attractions in the downtown area. Did not feel unsafe at all. Would definitely stay here again.
