Our first suite was lowest level with views of the air conditioning equipment. Dirty carpets, no view, no king bed, no decor. After arguing with the front desk, front desk manager and assistant manager, we got an 8th floor suite. They ""don't have any control over 3rd party vendors"" (travelocity) therefore they won't match their own lower pricing offered prior to arrival, won't confirm bedding, won't really care that you overpaid by $130 a night. Hotel breakfast was obviously union labor on their own schedule. Black mold in the shower grout, filthy carpeting, no pool or sauna. This DC landmark needs a new owner. Won't stay at a Renaissance hotel ever again.

Great location next to the Metro and very elegant lobby and hotel. Room was clean and comfortable, although I was told they had queen beds and got double beds instead. That made for sleeping somewhat difficult with four people. Would stay here again with just two people, although would also check other places, too.

What has happened to my beloved Mayflower? This was always my hotel of choice in DC when traveling on business, and I usually added a personal day before or after business. Things have changed. The rooms now have modern furniture, which does not fit in with the Mayflower's grand lobby. The rooms are still nice, the beds are still comfortable, but it's just not the same. Now this is your typical, run-of-the-mill, cookie-cutter Marriott, but without plasma televisions. Unfortunately this is not what I want in DC. I will be looking elsewhere next time.

  • Excellent Experience Here

This was a very good hotel experience all the way around. All staff was very friendly and helpful. It was clean and quiet. I only ate breakfast at the hotel, but the $18 breakfast included many tasty choices - especially fruits - tasty and ripe. The gym was nice with new equipment. However, for free-weights there were only dumbells. I was hoping for barbells - but no big deal.

While there, the outdoor temperature was 95 to 100 each day, and my room a/c kept me plenty chilly when needed. Staff was always posted in the lobby ready, and offering, to help. Valet parking is pricey at $35 per night, but when I handed the keys to the valet on Saturday night, he suggested I try a spot on the street for free to save me the money. I happily found one in the first spot around the corner. He could have easily taken my $35, but didn't.

The location is great. The Metro (subway) station is on the same block. The Metro takes you to all the places a tourist should want to go. The rate to The Smithsonian area is only $1.35. I flew into Washington National Airport, got on the subway there and took it all the way to the hotel for only $1.70.( I rented the car for only two of my 7 days here so I could visit friends outside the city.)

Excellent restaurants are all over the place - especially two blocks over along 19th Street. Across the street you can shop at The Gap, Victoria's Secret. Or just jump on the Metro and head to Freedom Heights ($1.70) and you've got Neiman Marcus, Lord & Taylor, etc. at the mall.

So, a terrific hotel for your trip to Washington D.C.
